It is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the operation of the slave systems (i.e.Working memory updating (WMU)—the ability to maintain accurate representations of information changing over time— has been successfully used in individual differences research to predict higher cognitive abilities.Thus, the retrieval component of updating could contribute to the age-related changes observed in the performance of many updating tasks.Atkinson’s and Shiffrin’s (1968) multi-store model was extremely successful in terms of the amount of research it generated.The aim of this study was to investigate possible age-related changes throughout childhood and adolescence in different component processes of working memory updating (WMU): retrieval, transformation, and substitution.A set of numerical WMU tasks was administered to four age groups (8-, 11-, 14-, and 21-year-olds).However, as a result of this research, it became apparent that there were a number of problems with their ideas concerning the characteristics of short-term memory.Building on this research, Baddeley and Hitch (1974) developed an alternative model of short-term memory which they called working memory (see fig 1).
